Betting bonanza

PUNTERS ACROSS Fife have been flocking to put their money on what they think the outcome of this evening’s big game at Hampden will be.

Every aspect of the Scotland versus Italy clash is being gambled on by Fifers looking to strike it lucky, from who will score the first goal to when it will be scored.

Bookies are predicting that around £10 million will be gambled on the match—a record for any fixture in any sport ever played involving Scotland.

Fifers throughout the region have been proving they like a flutter in the lead up to today’s game, and thousands more are likely to pile into bookmakers premises today to have a punt on the result. But while many Scotland fans will have their fingers crossed on a home win, others are betting with their heads rather than their hearts.

Ladbrokes in Kirkcaldy High Street cashier Pauline Stark admitted much of the cash being was in favour of the world champions.

Graham Sharpe of William Hill said, “Scottish fans have gone betting crazy for the match—to the extent where we are even taking bets for Alex McLeish to wear a kilt at the game at odds of 8/1 and at 33/1 to be knighted.”

Hill’s Liverpool branch has taken the largest single bet so far in the UK—a £5000 bet from an Italian at even money on an Italy win.
