Harbour artwork project

ARTISTS ARE being asked to come up with ideas for a public artwork to be installed at Anstruther harbour.

An invitation for submissions has been issued by Anstruther Town Centre Working Group which is to commission the lottery-funded piece.

Artists and designers who bid for the commission are being provided with a brief which describes the town’s strong sense of community, its maritime history and its architecture.

It says, “The requirement is for a very high-quality work undertaken in appropriate materials and fabricated and installed to a high standard.

“The overall desire is that a unique work that embodies the spirit of the community can be achieved.”

Bidders are also being told that the working group has kept an open mind on the content, material and construction process of the £25,000 installation, and it is interested in solutions ranging from the traditional to the virtual.

The brief also states that any structure proposed must appeal to people of all ages and to locals and visitors alike.

However, it must not be attractive to skateboarders.

It is also stipulated that the artwork must not block the open view of the sea or the surrounding architecture.

Artists and designers are warned that any installation must be able to withstand the erosive effects of waves crashing over the harbour wall.

A DVD was produced by East Neuk Youth Club recording the views of local people on what form the artwork should take and forms part of the brief issued by Fife Council.

A foundation for a three-dimensional artwork was incorporated into recent upgrade work at the eastern side of the harbour.

Submissions are to be made by January 9.

It is hoped the winning piece of artwork will be installed by December next year.
