It’s amazing what the raisins can do

Students at St Andrews University’s annual Raisin Monday shaving foam fight.

STUDENTS WERE on their best behaviour for the climax to the annual Raisin weekend celebrations.

The undergraduates heeded warnings to behave responsibly during the event.

A spokesman for the university said, “We are very pleased both for the students and the town that the event has passed very peacefully.”

The boorish behaviour of some students during the 2005 event led to a number of complaints from angry residents and businesses, which strained relations with the university.

By early yesterday the town’s streets were thronged with students in colourful and imaginative fancy dress making their way to St Salvator’s Quadrangle.

Gladiators, bumble bees, ballet dancers, nurses, Indian warriors and teddy bears were among the many characters who gathered in the quadrangle.

Senior students and members of the Kate Kennedy Club, who acted as stewards during the foam fight, had the unenviable task of cleaning-up after the students had departed.

Parts of North Street were cordoned off, and traffic wardens and police were on duty in an effort to keep vehicles flowing during the festivities.

Large crowds watched the students as they arrived at and departed from the quad.

Raisin weekend, which is unique to St Andrews, brings together students from all years in one event that can result in the the formation of lifelong friendships.
