MOTORISTS WHO sped past the wreckage of a car crash on Saturday have been chastised by police for their “irresponsible actions” and can expect to receive fines in the coming days.
A mobile police camera van positioned near the scene of the accident, which partially blocked the A9 south of Perth for around 45 minutes, caught a number of motorists travelling at speeds of up to 99 miles per hour.
The shocking situation was made worse by the fact that it occurred during National Rural Road Weekend, when Tayside Police set about highlighting the many dangers posed by country roads.
“I was particularly disappointed by the speeders on the A9 who were detected by the camera van after passing a collision,” Chief Inspector Sandy Bowman said.
“To pass the scene of a collision and then accelerate away to speeds of, in one instance almost 100mph, quite simply beggars belief.
“We always hope that people will modify their behaviour by what they see, but experiences such as this clearly show that this is not always the case.”
Tayside Police intend to contact the offending motorists in the coming weeks with a view to prosecution.
Although the weekend’s campaign was focused on rural roads, officers were also kept busy with numerous drink-driving offences.
Eight drivers were caught for drink-driving offences, seven between 11pm and 2.30am.
“Alcohol also impairs your ability to drive and I was satisfied to see that eight drivers were caught for drink-driving over the weekend,” added Mr Bowman.
