Police investigate BT building blaze

POLICE BEGAN interviewing staff at BT’s Telephone House yesterday after a blaze at the building.

Fire crews were called to the city centre office block on Saturday evening as fire tore through the fifth and sixth floors of the building.

Around 30 members had to be evacuated from the building and at its peak around 50 firefighters were involved in fighting the flames.

The upper floors of the Ward Road building have been extensively smoke and water damaged.

Windows on the sixth floor have also been blown out.

CCTV footage from the office has already been passed to police and yesterday staff helped investigators piece together how the blaze started— and if it was done so deliberately.

Saturday’s incident occurred just a month after there were two fires in the office block on the same day, both of which are still being investigated by police.

“A full investigation was initiated yesterday, including Tayside Fire and Rescue, to establish the full set of circumstances surrounding the fire,” said a police spokesman.

“Nothing is being ruled out or in at this stage of the investigation.

“Anyone who was in the area or the entrances to the building on West Bell Street and Ward Road around 7pm on Saturday should come forward as they may have valuable information.”

Electronic swipe cards are used by staff to enter the building let BT know who is in the office.

A company spokesman said there had been no reports of any of these cards going missing.

However, he refused to speculate about the cause of the blaze, or whether all three fires could be the work of the same individual.

He added, “The cause of the fire is being investigated by the police and we are in their hands.

“We are still assessing the full extent of the damage but there has been extensive smoke and water damage to the fifth and sixth floors.

“The staff who work on these floors are being given temporary accommodation in various meeting rooms in the building so we are using up other space and a lot of people can work from home.”
