Tragic twist led to death on Kingsway

THE 62-YEAR-OLD man who died in an accident on the Kingsway in Dundee on Friday had chosen to walk to work that day instead of taking the bus.

The tragic twist of fate was revealed last night by a friend as football coupon collector Kenneth Bird’s partner Maureen Saunders tried to come to terms with the events of the last few days.

“He was going to do some collecting,” said Emma Hood. “He would take the bus and do a week about with walking, so he was on foot on Friday.”

Ms Hood, who is Ms Saunders’ aunt, described Mr Bird as “just a normal person” who went about his daily business.

“We don’t know what happened—the body has not been released yet and we are waiting for the results of the post mortem,” she continued.

Mr Bird, of Hebrides Drive, was crossing the Kingsway at Mains Loan on Friday lunchtime when he was involved in a collision with a red Volkswagen Polo.

He died at the scene despite paramedics’ best efforts. Police are appealing for witnesses to the accident.

Ms Saunders was too upset to speak about the tragedy last night, but neighbour Edward Coutts described Mr Bird as a “nice man” who took pride in his community.

Mr Coutts said, “I knew him to say hello to—he was a very pleasant man.

“Whenever I saw him, he was always on foot and he carried a briefcase with him.”
