Dramatic “stand-off” ends with two injured

Members of the forensic team at the scene of last night’s drama.

A MAN stabbed himself in the stomach and a police officer was injured during an altercation in Broughty Ferry yesterday.

Police were called to a disturbance at a house in Grove Road at about 4.30 pm.

It is understood a 42-year-old man, who suffered serious wounds, was in breach of bail conditions and should not have been at the house.

Eyewitnesses told The Courier a “stand-off” developed between the man and the police in the front garden.

The man was taken by ambulance to Ninewells Hospital in Dundee.

His condition was described as “serious,” with a Tayside Police spokesperson adding the injuries were “potentially life-threatening.”

The police officer, who is 31, was also taken to Ninewells.

His injuries—thought to have been to his hand—were said to not be life-threatening, although he was to be detained in hospital overnight.

Inquiries into the incident by uniform and CID officers are continuing, and a forensic examination of the scene was also carried out.

Police cordoned off the house and were still stationed outside it last night.

It is believed officers were interviewing residents of the house.

Neighbours told The Courier the man at the centre of the incident “used to live” in the house but had since moved out.

It is understood he still has family living there.

One neighbour said last night he had witnessed the “disturbing” scene.

The man, who asked not to be identified, said, “I had been out walking the dog and I came home to witness a stand-off that had developed between a man that used to live at the address and the police.”

The neighbour said it continued with the man allegedly trying to inflict injuries on himself with a knife.

The police overpowered him and, during the scuffle, a police officer and the man were hurt.

He said the man was put on a stretcher and taken to hospital.
