Footballer narrowly escapes arrest

DUNDEE FC player Freddie Daquin appears to have escaped the prospect of being thrown in jail after being given a second chance to appear in court.

A warrant was issued for the 29-year-old’s arrest on Wednesday after he failed to appear at Perth District Court, despite a series of letters being sent to him relating to a charge of using his mobile phone while driving on the A9 between Stirling and Perth on August 27.

Perth Justice of the Peace Barbara Briggs-Constable ordered the warrant after concluding the player was snubbing the court and attempting to avoid justice.

Daquin faced being arrested on the warrant yesterday while training with his club; however, that was averted after the club’s chief executive Dave MacKinnon intervened.

Last night Mr MacKinnon said he had moved to resolve the situation after it had been brought to the club’s attention.

He said it had been a “misunderstanding” on Daquin’s part, and that the player would now co- operate with the authorities.

He added, “He is a French national and—although he has been in the country a length of time—his English and his reading of English is not the best.

“He didn’t fully understand the content of the letters or the seriousness of them.

“It was a complete mis-understanding.

“We have spoken to the police and explained the situation; we have spoken to the court in Perth and it appears we’ll have a new date for Freddie where he can appear in court with regard to this matter and explain the circumstances— so hopefully the court will understand the position.”

A police spokesperson said yesterday, “We are, of course, aware a warrant was issued at Perth District Court, but it would be inappropriate for us to make any sort of comment on an individual case.”
