FIREFIGHTERS IN protective suits were called to Carlingnose Point in North Queensferry after an unidentified container was washed up on the shore.
The barrel, thought to contain diesel, was taken away for examination.
A member of the public spotted it while walking in the area and the emergency services were contacted shortly after 11am on Saturday.
Fire crews from Rosyth and Dunfermline sealed the barrel in a larger drum to prevent it from leaking and it was guarded by a police officer until it was removed.
Police confirmed the barrel was sealed when it was found and it had not leaked.
