Gala re-opening for theatre

ARBROATH’S refurbished Webster Theatre re-opened on Saturday evening, with the Royal Scottish National Orchestra giving a gala opening performance.

Angus Provost Ruth Leslie Melville unveiled a commemorative plaque in the presence of an audience of invited guests.

Praising the results of the multi-million pound project, she said, “This theatre, with its magnificent facilities, is second to none in Scotland and we look forward to seeing local and national acts on stage here.

“I also hope the many community organisations in Arbroath and Angus continue to use the Webster and make it the success it deserves to be.

“This investment by Angus Council, with the help of Arbroath Common Good Fund, is a significant contribution to the cultural life of Angus and, indeed, to the economy.

“It is the largest cultural project we have funded in Angus and I am sure the public and artists who use the theatre will be impressed with its new look.’

The Webster closed in May 2006 for the £4 million refurbishment, which took 22 months to complete.

The entrance has been completely opened up, the auditorium and balcony re-seated, stage and backstage improved and new sound and lighting equipment installed. Every theatre-goer will find the overall experience much improved.

The assembly hall is refurbished with banked seating for 72 installed, so it can be used as a studio, film or performance space.
