Campaign wants end to snares

Caught by camera in a trap: petitioner Vicky Findlay with pet Peggy Sue and furry friend Jo.

A GROUP of giant “animals” were in Perth yesterday to gain public support for a ban on snares in Scotland.

The “animals”handed out information leaflets, postcards and stickers promoting a nationwide anti-snaring campaign, Hanging Is Still Legal In Scotland.

In addition to a two-week tour of cities, which takes in Dundee City Square today, the campaign to ban snares in Scotland will be advertised on a fleet of buses across the country and in cinema advertisements.

The public are being urged to visit a new dedicated website, www.bansnares.com, where they can quickly and easily lend their support.

The campaign is led by Advocates for Animals and the League Against Cruel Sports, funded by the Marchig Animal Welfare Trust, and supported by Hessilhead Wildlife Rescue Trust, Scottish Badgers, the International Otter Survival Fund and the Hare Preservation Trust.

Snares are primitive wire traps which can cause terrible suffering and a slow and lingering death.

A decision from the Scottish Government is expected within weeks.
