Winds see numbers down on ski slopes

AFTER TWO good weekends, the weather took its toll at the Scottish ski centres on Saturday.

Despite high winds and cover having been lost at most of the centres, there was still nearly 1200 people out.

The Lecht had five runs open and catered for around 500 people as it snowed on and off throughout the day.

Pat Mathieson said, “The snow today has not made any great change but it has helped to maintain the cover we have.”

Glenshee opened three of six runs available and had around 400 people out.

Only lower runs were open, however, due to high winds above.

Spokesman Stewart Davidson said, “We have lost a lot of snow cover in the past two days. There was some snow this morning, with more forecast on Tuesday, but the weather changed at midday to give a pleasant afternoon”.

Nevis Range opened for an hour running the gondola only and had around 40 people out.

Cairn Gorm was also hit by winds—some of them gusting up to 85mph—with 250 on the slopes.

Glencoe, which was due to reopen on Thursday, will assess the position today.
