Courses in motorcycle safety set to continue

FIFE POLICE will continue running courses aimed at improving motorcycle safety following a healthy response from the public last year.

The Bikesafe Scotland programme is based on a national syllabus and sees police motorcyclists or bikers from partner organisations providing advice on many aspects of motor- cycling, including professional riding techniques, the police system of motorcycle control, collision causation factors and defensive riding.

More than 80 people attended courses in Fife throughout 2007 and so the free one-day course will continue this year.

It lets people be assessed by an advanced police motorcyclist and includes short talks on riding skills and personal safety.

PC Gordon Jackson, who is involved in the scheme, said, “This is a chance for us to engage with bikers on an informal basis and discuss how they might be able to get more out of their biking experience—as well as being safe on the roads.”

Chief Inspector Alex Duncan, of the road policing department, said, “Unfortunately there are too many accidents involving bikers and while I welcome the reduction in accidents in the kingdom during 2007 there is no need to become complacent.”
