A litter of 11

A handful for Poppy, the first-time mother with a litter of 11 pups.

THE OWNERS of a labrador in Dundee were stunned when their 10-month-old dog presented them with 11 additions to the family.

Cheryl Stewart, from Ardler, said they had been expecting two or three pups, “but they just kept coming.”

Poppy became pregnant the first time she was in season, despite everyone’s best efforts to keep her apart from housemate Bailey, a chocolate labrador.

Cheryl said she and her partner had a sleepless night as they acted as impromptu midwives.

It was only two weeks before the pups arrived that she noticed Poppy was getting bigger and took her to the vet.

Because the young dog was so tense, the vet was unable to say for certain if Poppy was going to become a mother, but told Cheryl that, in any case, she would probably only have two or three puppies, as it was her first season.

“We had read up about it, so we would know what to do,” said Cheryl. “It was just manic. I couldn’t believe there were 11 of them.”
