Plan for agencies merger criticised

THE PROPOSAL to merge the Deer Commission for Scotland with Scottish Natural Heritage has been described as ‘the worst possible outcome’ by those who manage the country’s deer population.

The proposal was announced by First minister Alex Salmond earlier this week in his “bonfire” of quangos.

But the move has not pleased the Association for Deer Management Groups, the recognised body representing those who manage wild deer in Scotland.

ADG secretary Richard Cooke said, “The Association is very concerned by the First Minister’s announcement that DCS is to be amalgamated with SNH. In many ways we consider that this is the worst possible outcome of the Scottish Government review of its rural sector agencies.

“While we do not dispute that some rationalisation of rural sector agencies is needed, we believe this proposal is too limited and a missed opportunity.

However, he added, “We are relieved to see that these proposals will not be implemented straight away, legislative change being required.”
