Fraudster has his sentence deferred

A 39-YEAR-OLD man who sold non-existent audio equipment to online buyers, and also fraudulently obtained thousands of pounds worth of similar items by posing as a representative of both Angus College and Dundee College, had sentence further deferred when he appeared at Arbroath Sheriff Court yesterday.

Gary Feeney, now of Canning Street, Dundee, but formerly of Westgate, Friockheim, had previously admitted that between June 15 and December 12, 2006, having formed a fraudulent scheme, he placed advertisements using false names on the Sound on Sound internet web page and induced others to pay money into his bank account for items he failed to send.

Feeney obtained a total of £2570 in this way.

Feeney had also admitted that between November 15 and December 8, 2006, he pretended to a member of staff at Digital Village in Romford that he was a representative of Angus College and ordered a quantity of specialised audio equipment worth £3414, which was duly delivered to his Friockheim home but never paid for.

He further admitted that on January 4 last year he pretended to the same Digital Village staff member that he was a representative of Dundee College and ordered and received, but never paid for, equipment valued at £1493.74.

Sentence was deferred until August 5 for Feeney to be of good behaviour and for the preparation of social inquiry and community service reports and an assessment of his suitability for a Restriction of Liberty Order.

Sheriff Norrie Stein also told Feeney to start saving to pay off the £7477.74 in money and equipment he obtained by fraud.
