Punters snap up tickets as lottery fever bites

Brian Chalmers, of Dundee, buys a ticket at Asda in the city’s Kirkton area.

SIX BRITISH tickets shared the record £95m rollover jackpot in the EuroMillions lottery with 10 in other countries last night.

None matched the five main numbers and two Lucky Star numbers, so the jackpot was shared between the next level of winners.

Camelot said up to 10 million tickets were bought in Britain, a fair amount apparently in Tayside and Fife as punters spent yesterday scrambling for a chance of a win.

It was potentially the biggest single lottery payout the world had seen and with such a life- changing figure at stake, punters had EuroMillions fever.

In Perth, officially Scotland’s luckiest city, lottery business was described as “phenomenal.”

Just a month ago, operators revealed Perth was the only Scottish city in the National Lottery’s top 10 luckiest postal towns, according to data of prize-winning entries per adult player population.

South Methven Street newsagent George McConnell revealed national attention was focused on his shop, as he prepared to receive TV crews seeking the secret of local luck.

He said, “Sales have been just phenomenal, particularly today.”

Mr McConnell added, “People have been buying in bulk and there have been far more people than usual buying tickets.”

A worker at R&I Baillie in North Methven Street said sales were as much as treble the usual volume.

Angus also seemed Lotto potty, with steady ticket sales reported throughout the county.

A spokesperson at R. S. McColl’s in Timmergreens, Arbroath, said, “I would say a £6 spend on tickets this week is not uncommon but they are all wasting their time because I intend winning it!”

A spokeswoman for Tesco in Kirkcaldy said, “Usually it’s just single tickets people buy, but we’re finding that people are coming in wanting half a dozen tickets in one go.”

It was a similar story at W. H. Smith and Woolworths, Kirkcaldy, with lengthy queues even at 10am.

The winning numbers in the EuroMillions draw were 17, 28, 30, 38 and 44. The Lucky Star numbers were 01 and 04.
