High-tech scanning boost for students

STUDENTS AT Perth College were yesterday given the chance to learn about revolutionary baby scanning techniques.

They were joined by Dr Sandy Christie, former head of diagnostic ultrasound at Ninewells Hospital, who has been at the forefront of ultrasound development since 1965.

His current venture, the Baby Scan studio in Perth’s St James VI Business Centre, allows parents the chance to see digital images of their child before birth and offers the rare opportunity to obtain “4D” images of their unborn babies.

Dr Christie said, “In 3D and 4D scans you really do get some amazing expressions. It is already a little human being doing all the usual things like yawning, smiling and frowning.”

The students will use their new-found knowledge as part of studies to become NHS doctors in Scotland.

The pioneering Pathways to Medicine course has been formally endorsed by St Andrews University’s Bute Medical School and Perth College.
