MINISTRY OF Defence officials are searching for the relatives of a Dundee man who died while serving in the army in Africa.
Staff Sergeant Thomas Arthur Ridout was posted to Kenya after a series of workers strikes in the former British east African colony in early 1950.
He died in December that year and is buried at the Nanyuki Civil Cemetery, on the north-west slopes of Mount Kenya, 100 miles north of the capital, Nairobi.
The MoD is seeking his descendants for their permission to move his grave.
Sgt Ridout served with the Royal Army Ordinance Corps, who were responsible for the supply and maintenance of weapons and equipment.
The disturbances led to the Mau Mau Rebellion, the commitment of thousands of British troops and, ultimately, Kenyan independence.
Army records showed him to be a hardworking, honest and trustworthy soldier and a keen sportsman. He was in his second spell with the forces, and had served in Britain as well as in Africa.
The MoD would like to trace Mr Ridout’s widow, Catherine, or son, David, but have not been in contact with the family since 1951, when they lived on Kingsway East. According to records, the family also lived in Hawkhill, before moving to the Kingsway.
Anyone with any information should contact Kristella Eastwood at the MoD on 01452 712 612, ext 6052, or write to Deceased Estates, SPVA, JCCC, Room 43b, Building 182, RAF Innsworth, Gloucester GL3 1HW.
