Accident will not see works on corner

Angus Council’s infrastructure services convener yesterday reaffirmed the local authority’s position regarding its decision not to carry out realignment work at the bends known as Conchie’s Corner, on the A930 road linking Carnoustie and Monifieth.

Councillor David May has spoken out after campaigners sought to make a connection between what they claim is the danger posed by the bends and an accident which occurred nearby on Sunday, in which a young motorcyclist was seriously injured when his machine was involved in a collision with a car as both headed towards Carnoustie.

Mr May said, “Like everyone, I was upset to hear of the accident at the entrance to a private residence on Sunday.

“However, the information given to us by the police has clarified that the accident which happened on the straight stretch of road 150 metres west of the double bend was entirely unrelated to the road layout at Conchie’s Corner.”

Mr May said, “This accident is extremely regrettable and, obviously, our thoughts are with those involved but it has been confirmed (by the police) that the road layout at the corner was not a factor in the accident.

“The council’s position, therefore, is unchanged.

“As agreed at the council meeting, no realignment of the A930 between Monifieth and Barry is currently proposed but the route will be considered in the wider report being brought forward on accident priority routes in the county.”

Angus Council took the decision to make no change to the road alignment after considering the accident statistics and a range of costed options for realignment at its meeting on February 14.

The accident, involving a car and a motorcycle which were both travelling towards Carnoustie, is the subject of an ongoing police investigation.

Yesterday, the injured man, who has not been named, remained in a critical condition in the intensive care unit at Ninewells Hospital in Dundee.

Mr May said the authority had to direct its limited resources to the areas of greatest need and added, “Every accident on our roads is regrettable—in the past three years we have had 28 fatal road accidents in Angus—and we have to take account of these figures and put resources where they will provide the greatest benefit.”
