Morgan Academy FP will face city rivals Dundee High School FP in the fifth round of the Scottish Hydro Electric Cup next week, writes Steve Scott, rugby correspondent.
At Murrayfield yesterday former Scotland hooker Kevin McKenzie drew the two Dundee teams out together to meet at DHSFP’s Mayfield ground next Saturday.
Morgan’s Ally Geddes welcomed the draw to give the Forfar Road club a chance to put one over on the Premiership One team.
“We would have been happier with a home draw, but the whole club is already looking forward to the game,” he said.
“Neither club has been setting the pace in their respective divisions, however the cup is a one-off game and anything can happen even if DHSFP will naturally be favourites given their league status and their experience in the cup competitions.
“Whatever happens, the city will have a team in the last 16, which can only be good.”
Morgan won their place in the fifth round with a resounding win over Kirkcaldy at the weekend while High thrashed Aberdeenshire.
Both clubs are no strangers to finals day at Murrayfield, having been involved on three occasions each. Morgan have won three bowl finals in three attempts, while Dundee have won the shield and were beaten finalists in the main cup twice.
Three other Midlands clubs had good draws with Perthshire having a home tie against Heriot’s at North Inch, while Dunfermline take on Aberdeen GSFP at McKane Park.
McKenzie’s own Falkirk take on Selkirk. Defending champions Glasgow Hawks are away to Melrose.
