Exhibition revives retail memories

A PERTHSHIRE man has cut the ribbon at an exhibition—99 years after his mother opened the shop it is based on.

Visitors to the Victoria Hotel in Blairgowrie are being given a fascinating glimpse into life almost 100 years ago following the faithful reconstruction of a local draper’s shop.

Miss Greive’s drapery store was a feature of life in the town for many years.

It has now been replicated in minute detail by dedicated members of the Blairgowrie and Rattray Blethers group.

Sir William Macpherson declared the impressive exhibition open and the ribbon was cut by Ian Osborough—just as his mother had done 99 years ago, when aged four, at her auntie’s High Street drapery store.

Margaret Anton of the Blairgowrie and Rattray Blethers said it was a fascinating exhibition to put together—and paid tribute to all those who helped make it possible.

Modestly describing the group as a collection of “enthusiastic oldies”, she said, “We feel it is a most unusual and fascinating glimpse into the past.

“The group meets monthly in the Victoria Hotel and has grown in strength to almost 50 very enthusiastic members.

“The display is quite amazing and was greatly admired by all present at the opening.

“Everyone was overwhelmed by the wonderful articles we have managed to collect.”

The exhibition will be left in situ for at least two months and members of the public are invited to the Victoria Hotel on Lower Mill Street for a look.

“We would like people to see for themselves what a group of enthusiastic oldies can do,” Ms Anton added.
