SUPPORTERS OF the St Andrews Fairtrade Town Campaign have lined up a programme in celebration of the national Fairtrade Fortnight initiative, Change Today, Choose Fairtrade.

Alice Curteis, who chairs the St Andrews campaign, said, “There are now more than 50 kinds of (fair trade) products available in St Andrews, including cosmetics, rugs, cushions and handbags, and we are trying to make it easier for people to find them by listing them on our website and in our Fairtrade Finder.”

Tonight, the New Picture House will be showing Black Gold, a tale of farmers in Ethiopia and one man’s journey to secure them a fair price for their goods. It has been organised by the university’s Fairtrade group and starts at 6.30pm.

On March 5 a talk will be given by Julius Ethang’atha —a Fairtrade tea grower from Kenya—at St Andrews University arts building lecture theatre on The Scores. It starts at 7.30pm and has been organised jointly by the town and university Fairtrade campaign groups and by Scottish Fair Trade Forum.

A coffee morning and stalls have also been organised by the 7th St Andrews Girl Guides on Saturday from 10am to noon in Hope Park Church.

There are special promotions at the Old Union Diner and Beatons; Fairtrade baking at Northpoint every day; and a Fairtrade stall in Holy Trinity Parish Church from 10am to noon daily except Mondays.

*Anstruther Co-op was like a scene from Alice in Wonderland yesterday as the shop celebrated Fairtrade Fortnight.

A Mad Hatter’s tea party—complete with the March Hare and a giant teapot—was held to allow customers to sample the Co-op’s own brand tea which is now Fairtrade.
