Angus artists on show

WORK BY three of the finest artists from Angus is being showcased at The Meffan in Forfar in an event dubbed unique by organisers.

A selection of pieces from the Angus Council art collection by William Lamb, James Watterston Herald and David Waterson have been brought together for the exhibition.

The main gallery is hosting an exhibition spotlighting Montrose sculptor William Lamb (1893-1951), widely regarded as one of the finest of his generation.

It also demonstrates his skill as a painter and printmaker and highlights his enthusiasm for the Angus landscape and its communities.

His works compete for attention alongside a collection by Forfar-born artist James Watterston Herald (1859–1914).

The paintings and drawings highlight his trademark hazy atmosphere and show how he was one of the most imaginative and talented artists in pastel and watercolour in his day.

In the upper gallery, etchings, mezzotints, pastels, watercolours and oils by Brechin artist David Waterson (1870–1954) are on display.

Through his paintings and prints of the Angus countryside, he reveals his ability to capture mood and atmosphere.

Cultural services manager Norman Atkinson said, “It is a unique treble at The Meffan, to have three of the top artists in Angus on display at the same time.”
