The FAMILY of tragic Perth soldier James Collinson made an emotional visit to the street named in his honour to mark its completion yesterday.
James’s parents Jim and Yvonne Collinson were joined by other family members at Collinson View, which has been built on the site of the former Jeanfield Swifts football ground, off Crieff Road.
The street was named in James’s honour to mark the determined campaign by his parents to secure an inquiry into his mysterious death at the Deepcut training barracks in Surrey in 2001.
Former Perth High School pupil James was 17 when he died and building work on Collinson View began on what would have been his 22nd birthday in December 2006.
His parents have unceasingly fought to establish exactly what happened to him and other squaddies who died—apparently by suicide—at the base.
Yvonne said, “Jim and I are extremely moved by this gesture to name the street after our son. This will ensure there is a lasting memory of him in his home town.”
They were accompanied by Pete Wishart MP who has campaigned alongside the family over the past six years.
He said, “I very much welcome this commemoration.
“The naming of this street is a recognition of James’s association with the city of Perth and is an appropriate tribute to the determined campaign by the Collinson family to seek the truth and secure justice for their son.”
Councillor Peter Barrett said, “I am very glad to see the signs erected in memory of James Collinson.
“The street name was chosen by my friend and predecessor as housing convener and local councillor Gordon Hunter as a tribute to James and his family.
“Persimmon Homes have offered to display a memorial plaque to James as a further and lasting memorial and I am very pleased that James’s family have given their approval.”
