AROUND 50 green-fingered people put down their roots at Middleton Woods in Dundee yesterday.
People of all ages were taking part in the Plant a Tree Day where they planted over 200 small oaks, tall pines and spreading willow trees in the community woodland.
It is hoped the small trees will grow into varied woodland that will be enjoyed by wildlife and locals for decades to come.
Volunteers, pupils from Braeview Academy Duke of Edinburgh programme, 22nd Fintry Cubs and members of the 2450 (Dudhope) Squadron of the Air Training Corps joined the woodland management team as they developed part of the wood.
“This is a great way for Dundee people to help the growing woodland,” said leisure, arts and communities convener Richard McCready, who also attended the tree plant.
“It was good fun and it was also good to see so many people of all ages helping out. Events such as this help to build community spirit,” he added.
As well as planting the new trees, the volunteers also replanted around 50 trees that had been uprooted by the recent bad weather. People who took part were given leaflets, special mugs and a children’s fun sheet.
Middleton Woods was fenced off and developed in 1993, just yards from the residential Whitfield area where Longhaugh Road meets Berwick Drive.
Dundee City Council looks after the woods with support from local people through the management team.
