More fresh leads in Lannen murder hunt

DETECTIVES investigating the unsolved murder of Dundee teenager Carol Lannen yesterday continued to uncover new leads as they hope to finally catch her brutal killer.

Detective Chief Inspector Ewen West, who is heading the manhunt, said he was amazed by the amount of new information that has come forward to the inquiry team.

Officers are getting ready to follow up several leads that could help to complete the jigsaw.

“In terms of people calling in, we had quite a few calls last night, and information continued to come in today, and I’m delighted by the response we’ve received,” DCI West said last night.

“Yesterday I said I still believed there was useful information out there and that’s been the case—all along it hasn’t surprised me that people have kept getting in touch after 29 years.

“The information looks particularly useful and now we need to take time to go through it, research it and go out and speak to the people to get more detail from them.

“That will take time but, at the same time, if there is anybody swithering, don’t swither—get in touch.”

Fresh information, including the identification of a pub in Dundee that Carol used to frequent, has been unearthed as a result of focused inquiries around Kintore, Aberdeenshire, where the victim’s bag was found days after her body was discovered at Templeton Woods in Dundee.

“We’ve had two officers back up in Aberdeen following up leads around the Kintore area and some of the information they have gathered appears to be potentially useful,” DCI West said.

“So it’s all looking positive at this point in time. People appear to have a real interest in trying to help bring this one to a conclusion and from our point of view, as investigators, that is first-class.”

A mystery woman who contacted police on Monday with information—prompted by an article about the case in The Courier that day—was also back in touch.

The woman, who had earlier phoned with clues about the identity of a man named Roger, believed to be a friend of the teenager’s, spoke to police after they appealed for her to make contact again.

Police hope that by renewing calls for information they might jog memories still further, and help to build a picture of exactly what happened to teenager Carol.

The body of the 18-year-old mother of one was found in Templeton Woods, Dundee, on March 21, 1979.

If anyone recalls seeing Carol in the Highwayman, or has any information concerning other places she may have visited or frequented, they should contact the police.

“We would regard all the calls we received as valuable. It has only been 24 hours since our request, so although it is still very early days we’ve been very encouraged,” DCI West said.
