Death probe detectives receive new information

THE DETECTIVE leading the investigation into the murder of Dundee mum Carol Lannen almost 29 years ago has revealed that “completely new” information has been received.

Detective Chief Inspector Ewen West said Tayside Police have had more than 20 separate calls following a renewed plea on Tuesday. All of them will be followed up.

The Operation Trinity head acknowledged he was surprised by the amount of new information being phoned in by the public to assist the case.

“I want to publicly thank everyone who has called us this week with a view to helping our inquiries,” said DCI West.

“We have had more than 20 responses over the last three days, a number of those via Crimestoppers.

“What has impressed me is that we are not going over old ground here—the vast majority of the information is completely new to the investigation.

“We have spoken to those callers, taken as much information as possible from them and are now in the process of assessing what they’ve told us.

“We will be visiting almost every one of those people to speak to them further in person.”

Calls have come in from the Dundee area, as well as Angus and the Mearns and Aberdeenshire.

DCI West added, “Information is key to progressing our inquiries.

“I would again urge anyone who might have information—no matter how insignificant they believe it to be—to get in touch with us.

“The inquiry team is on hand to speak to you and we are more than happy to receive any information via Crimestoppers.

“That information is as crucial now as it was in 1979.”

Carol’s body was found in Templeton Woods, near Dundee, on March 21, 1979.

She was last seen at about 8pm the previous day in the area of Exchange Street, Dundee, where she was seen to get into the passenger seat of a red vehicle driven by a man.

Her handbag was recovered on the banks of the River Don at Kintore, Aber-deenshire, on April 1 that year.

It led to intense police activity at the time and during more recent inquiries.

Tayside officers have been in the area again this week.

The area of the river which is of particular interest is near to Kintore Bridge.

The bag was recovered, as the river flows, just beyond the bridge.

Detectives also want to identify a man called Roger who lived in the Main Street who was believed to be a bus driver.

The inquiry team also wants to hear from anyone who may recall seeing Carol in the Highwayman Pub, in the Hilltown area of Dundee, or any other places.

Anyone with information that can help the inquiry team can contact the police on 01382 591909, text 07973 124711, Email mail@tayside.pnn.police.uk or call Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
