Migrant literacy call to employers

EMPLOYERS IN Perth and Kinross are being urged to help improve the literacy and numeracy skills of migrant workers.

An initiative—titled the Learning Curve—is set to be launched with a special event at the A. K. Bell Library on Wednesday.

Thousands of foreigners now live and work in Perth, including more than 3000 Poles.

A Perth and Kinross Council spokesman gave details of this week’s inaugural Learning Curve meeting.

“It will represent a chance for the council to find out what employers need to help develop the workplace language and number skills of migrant workers.

“It will also examine the need to make migrant workers aware of safety at work procedures,” he said.

Wednesday’s event will feature presentations from service providers along with a range of workshops.

It will also include an “open session” for employers to highlight any issues they face when bringing in a seasonal workforce.

“The meeting will follow the official opening of The Learning Curve—a new literacy in the community project based at the library,” the spokesman added.

The Learning Curve initiative is set to provide:

*A place for people to come and learn on their own, one to one or in small groups.

*Somewhere people can get help with writing Emails and letters, understanding instructions and managing money and family paperwork.

*A place that recognises people may have had a negative experience of education and work or may have had a break from the labour market and are now trying to get back to work.

*A base for people who may have particular needs or have circumstances that stand in their way.

*A resource centre for all things skills-related, including English for speakers of other languages.

*An administration centre for the local literacy partnership, which ensures flexible provision and is responsive to the needs of individuals, employers and the wider community.

“Anyone is welcome to drop in at the Learning Curve between 9.30am-2.30pm, Monday to Friday, and a member of staff will be happy to provide help, guidance and support,” the council spokesman said.
