WEST FIFERS were encouraged to ditch the supermarket trolley and go green by eating food grown or raised within the confines of the region.
Several families across the region have already committed themselves to the Fife Diet experiment, which was launched in Falkland last November.
The Fife Diet was the brainchild of Mike Small, a writer with a keen interest in ecological issues.
The experiment aims to raise awareness of the wide range of locally-sourced produce available and the environmental benefits of eating food which has not been flown halfway across the globe.
It takes its lead from the 100 Mile Diet, which was established two years ago when a Canadian couple decided to buy or gather all their food and drink from within 100 miles of their home in Vancouver.
The 100 Mile Diet captured the imagination and has grown from being a personal crusade to an international movement.
Participants have been charting their progress with a series of public meetings and via a blog.
Their latest meeting took place at the North Queensferry Community Centre on Saturday.
More details on the diet are available from www. fifediet.wordpress.com.
