Tartan Day commemorates the signing of the Declaration of Arbroath on April 6, 1320, so it’s only fitting that Arbroath takes centre stage in the Angus celebrations.
A week of events will kick off with the Arbroath Yomp on Sunday, March 30, at Inchcape Park, with the firing of a ceremonial gun.
For those less energetic there will be music and family fun.
“A yomp is simply a walk,” said Councillor David Fairweather, who is involved in the organisation of the event.
“Yomp” was the term coined by the Royal Marines when they were in the Falklands and had to walk many miles carrying all their equipment in backpacks weighing almost two stone.
“We’re delighted that the Arbroath Yomp is the launch event for Arbroath’s week of Tartan Day events as it provides us with an excellent opportunity for greater awareness of this fun, family occasion,” said Councillor Fairweather.
“The yomp route stretches from Inchcape Park to Easthaven and back again, which is a distance of about eight miles—and two-stone backpacks are optional!”
The yomp is being organised by Arbroath Business Association, the Royal Marines Association and the British Legion, with help from Sphinx Battery, which is attached to 45 Commando Royal Marines and based at RM Condor, Arbroath.
“This is the second year of the Arbroath Yomp and we are hoping that it will be even more successful than last year’s event,” said Councillor Fairweather.
Over 250 application forms have already been sent out to prospective yompers but there’s no limit to how many people can join in—and there’s no upper or lower age limit either.
“Taking part in the Arbroath Yomp, or simply experiencing the atmosphere as the yompers set off and return, is a great way to remember Arbroath’s place in history and, as the event is sponsored, is also a great way to raise funds for your own organisation and charity,” he said.
