Carnoustie to welcome left-handed golfers

CARNOUSTIE IS to host another major golf tournament—the World Left Handed Golf Champion-ships.

More than 400 left-handed golfers from across the globe, and their entourage, are expected to attend the event in 2012.

Stuart French, Angus Council’s Carnoustie country golf consultant and golf ambassador for the Angus and Dundee Area Tourism Partnership, spearheaded the campaign to attract the tournament.

“Bringing this high- profile global event to the area gives our reputation as a prime golf destination yet another boost,” he said.

“An event of this scale exposes another sector of the hugely-competitive golf market to our magnificent north-east courses and it will generate significant economic returns for the area. ”

Mr French has been representing the area at golf shows around the world.

Angus Council’s economic development spokes-man Councillor David May, said securing the tournament is tremendous news.

He said, “Golf tourism is of huge importance to the region and has the potential to bring major economic benefits, so I’m delighted that our marketing efforts are beginning to pay off.

“We need to capitalise on the unique visitor experience which the Angus and Dundee area offers golfers, and increase tourism numbers by raising the profile of the area on a global scale.”
