Wight’s remarkable run goes on

Third division champions East Fife are applauded onto the park by Saturday’s opponents Montrose.

SINCE HIS signing from Arbroath in January, East Fife goalkeeper Craig Wight has kept an astonishing six clean sheets in his six first team games for the third division champions and yet Methil boss Dave Baikie doesn’t know if he’ll have the player for next year’s second division challenge.

The former Hibs and Livingston goalie kept his record intact with a 64th minute penalty save from Montrose striker John Baird.

Baikie said, “I don’t want to tempt fate but Craig has played two reserve games and six first team games and has still to lose a goal.

“I wouldn’t say he was unbeatable but the penalty save typified what he’s done since he came here.

“I know that he was in the States for four years and that his girlfriend’s from America and I think he’s had an offer to go back as a coach with his former club, so we’ll need to wait and see what pans out.”

The Methil number one revealed that this was his best ever run—at least in Scottish football.

“When I got promotion with Arbroath in 1997-98 I think I had five or six that season, but in America I had 10 or 12 consecutive shutouts,” said Wight.

“Certainly in Scottish football this would be my best run.”

Ironically, in his last game for Arbroath he lost five goals—against Montrose.
