Levein is keeping an eye on Goodwillie’s progress

CRAIG LEVEIN last night told striker David Goodwillie that while he might be gone he hasn’t been forgotten.

Goodwillie—who turns 19 tomorrow—has been on loan to Raith Rovers since November, netting eight times in 19 appearances for the second division promotion chasers.

But his manager revealed he’s been keeping close tabs on the youngster.

“David is a young lad who is a bit inconsistent and that’s why we loaned him out,’’ he said. “Things happened too early for him here.

“He was hardly in the door and he was involved with the first-team and the hype that went with that didn’t do him any good.

“He needed to get back to the starting line and that’s what we are doing with him.

“He is at Raith to gain experience of playing competitive first-team football and the exercise is serving its purpose.

“We’d had him watched four times and will watch him another twice before the season is over, but what I’ve heard is encouraging.

“He’s gradually improving and John McGlynn, who texts me after every game to let me know how David has done, says Saturday’s win at Ross County in which he scored twice was his best game for them.’’

Meanwhile, United midfielder Greg Cameron, who has been on loan to St Johnstone, could be facing knee surgery after being carried off during Saints’ home defeat to Clyde on Tuesday.

It is feared he has damaged his cartilage, but that has yet to be confirmed.

Levein added, “He has had a hard time of it with injuries this season but he is still a young player and he can come back from this.”

United’s Prince Buaben was an unused sub in Ghana’s 2-1 defeat by Mexico at Fulham’s Craven Cottage last night.
