McGlynn setting his sights on lofty finish

RAITH ROVERS boss John McGlynn has set his sights on a second-placed finish as his side seek to build momentum towards the playoffs.

The Kirkcaldy club looked set to be involved a real fight just to stay in the top four after a February to forget saw them lose four games on the bounce, results which were followed up with a narrow Fife derby win and a 1-0 defeat to Peterhead in early March.

But success against second top Airdrie and a victory over league leaders Ross County in the last fortnight has given everyone at the club renewed hope of securing a play-off spot.

“We’re looking at finishing as high up the table as we can and the way the fixtures are panning out there’s a fair chance we could finish second,” said McGlynn.

“Winning breeds confidence and if we keep winning and playing well the league position will take care of itself.

“Although losing four games affected confidence, in many of these games we played well, but just didn’t get the breaks.

“There’s some difficult games to come but we have to keep believing in the players and make sure they believe in themselves.”

With just five games remaining, Rovers sit three points adrift of Airdrie but, perhaps more importantly in the overall scheme of things, eight points ahead of Peterhead who currently occupy fifth spot.

That means that a home win over Queen’s Park on Saturday will put Raith within touching distance of a playoff spot.

However, Rovers have been hit with another injury blow after defender Todd Lumsden suffered a calf problem in training.

The club’s defensive line hasn’t had its problems to seek this season, with Mark Campbell only recently returning after injury and Marvin Andrews ruled out for the rest of the campaign due to knee problems.

“It’s too early to say how long Todd will be out for,” McGlynn added.
