Awards for ‘inspirational’ youngsters

AN 18-YEAR-OLD girl from Dundee who gave up her job to do voluntary work for a city charity was among several young people presented with an award yesterday.

Lisa Matthew, a volunteer with Fairbridge, was a recipient of a Diana Award, which is part of the princess’s legacy and is given to 12 to 18-year-olds who have made a difference to their friends, families, schools and communities.

Dundee Lord Provost John Letford presented Lisa, who had previously worked as a customer services manager, with the award at The Shore.

Other recipients included five teenagers involved in Barnardo’s Face project, 12 volunteers for the Attic Youth Project and Grove Academy pupil Michael Forbes.

Michael (16) is an ambassador for his school and was involved in delivering pupils’ views to the council’s director of education.

Mr Letford said, “The young people who have taken part in the Diana Award in Dundee are a credit to this city and their efforts are inspirational.”

Maggie Turner, director of the Diana Award, added, “The Diana Award gives public recognition to young unsung heroes who give their time and expertise without seeking reward for themselves.”
