Brown is target of Green campaign

A GROUP of Gordon Brown “clones” are set to descend on Kirkcaldy’s Town Square next week as part of an environmental campaign.

Friends of the Earth Fife hope the stunt will put pressure on the Government to tighten the new Climate Change law to include aviation and shipping emissions.

It ties in with a national day of action in support of their Big Ask campaign.

Protesters dressed like the prime minister will gather at the town house next Saturday and cover their eyes as model planes are lifted into the air, to portray Mr Brown’s alleged ignorance of the issue.

FoE Fife spokeswoman Claire Reid said, “It’s crazy for Gordon Brown to leave out climate changing emissions from planes and ships from the new Climate Change Law, but that’s exactly what he’s doing.

“Aviation is the fastest growing source of carbon dioxide emissions. Government figures published in January 2008 showed aviation accounts for 6.4% of UK carbon emissions.

“The impact of aviation emissions is double that of CO2 because of other gases planes pump out at altitude.

“Why should industry and businesses be held to account for their carbon emissions but not aviation?”

She added, “Not including aviation emissions in the bill is like banning drink-driving but making vodka drinkers exempt.”
