Appalling attack on pensioner at home

AN 86-YEAR-OLD Perthshire woman was yesterday assaulted in her own home by a trio of thugs.

The young men launched the sickening attack after forcing their way into the pensioner’s house near Bridge of Earn.

Police last night revealed the men—believed to be aged between 18 and 20—made off with a four-figure sum of money.

Although “extremely upset” by the depraved attack, the pensioner fortunately escaped without sustaining physical injuries.

Detectives are now warning all elderly and vulnerable residents to treat unannounced callers with “vigilance and suspicion.”

Police said the three young men responsible claimed to be from the water board before committing the offence, which took place at lunchtime.

“Officers in Perth are investigating an assault and robbery which occurred in the Kilgraston Terrace area of Kintillo, near to Bridge of Earn,” a spokesman said.

“At about 1pm an 86-year-old woman answered her door to three men who claimed to be from the water board.

“The woman was persuaded to allow the men into her home.

“Once inside the men have assaulted and then robbed her of a four-figure sum of money before leaving the scene.”

Detectives provided no specific details of the assault but police were able to secure descriptions of two of the three assailants.

“Two of the males have been described as being approximately 18 to 20 years of age and about 5 feet 2 inches tall,” the spokesman added.

Police last night reminded residents they had nothing to fear from genuine callers but warned, “We would urge residents to be vigilant and suspicious of anyone arriving unannounced at their door.

“Where someone claims to be a workman of any description, demand to see some form of identification.”

The spokesman added, “Even then, if you are not satisfied that they are who they claim to be, do not let them in and contact the police.”

Anyone with information regarding the appalling attack on the pensioner is urged to call Tayside Police “immediately” on 01738 621141.
