Change of ward for fractured skull baby

The baby girl from Fife who suffered a fractured skull after being struck by a rolling pin which fell from a third-storey window in Dundee city centre has been moved from high dependency at Ninewells Hospital into the children’s ward.

But little Alyssa Burns’ parents have been told it could take up to eight weeks before they will know the extent of her injuries.

The tot’s mother Claire said, “Alyssa has some internal bleeding but the consultant treating her is hopeful that it will trickle away by itself without needing to be drained—but that could take at least a week.

“We have also been told it takes between six to eight weeks for an injury of this nature to heal naturally so it is too early to say what the prognosis is at this stage.

“At the moment she is very swollen, having been struck on one side of the head by the rolling pin and banging her head on the other side on the buggy as a result of the force.

“She is as well as can be expected under the circumstances though and is being closely monitored.

“She has been managing to drink small amounts of fluids but not nearly as much as we would like.”

Claire said 19-month-old Alyssa has a high temperature which doctors have said could be the result of an infection and has been getting antibiotics pumped into her by an IV drip.

Claire—who lives with her husband John-Paul, Alyssa and older daughter Nicole in Lochgelly—said, “The whole family are still in shock that this has happened to us.

“It all just feels so unreal.

“Alyssa is being so brave though and we are all just trying to stay strong and positive for her.”

The incident, which occurred on Thursday morning outside Boots the Chemist near the Overgate shopping centre, has been captured by police CCTV cameras and is being investigated by the Health and Safety Executive.
