Renowned Fife photographer Mr Bill Flett

Mr Flett.

WELL-KNOWN EAST Neuk photographer Bill Flett has died in Ninewells Hospital, Dundee after a short illness. He was 78.

Mr Flett recorded life in St Andrews and throughout the East Neuk coastal communities for D. C. Thomson Ltd and The Courier newspaper for more than 36 years.

Born and raised in Cellardyke, he was introduced to photography by the late George Cowie, a renowned press photographer in St Andrews, and it was to become the love of Mr Flett’s life.

His kindly charm and unassuming character made him a popular and familiar figure with both young and old as he captured images at events, often travelling by public transport to cover them.

His official assignments saw him come into contact with stars of stage and screen, sports figures, royalty, two US presidents, statesmen, and numerous celebrities, in addition to covering day-to-day events.

He covered for many years the ceremony on the Old Course of the new R&A captain officially playing himself into office, as well as a host of local events such as the St Monans Sea Queen festival, the Lammas Market in St Andrews, the Anstruther lifeboat gala and activities at schools and churches.

His dedication over almost four decades in capturing life in the area with his camera won him recognition for his services from a host of organisations.

Mr Flett built up an unrivalled archive of historically significant photographs during his career, providing a rich and unique source of valuable information for generations to come.

A single man, Mr Flett was predeceased several years ago by his brother, Captain John Flett, harbourmaster at New Plymouth, New Zealand.

A funeral service will take place at Cellardyke Parish Church, tomorrow at 1.30pm and thereafter to Anstruther cemetery.
