More misery as roadworks hit city drivers

Tailback in Marketgait almost to the West Port.

ANOTHER WEEK of roadworks misery began for drivers in Dundee yesterday, with obstructions and lane closures causing delays.

While worst fears may have seemed unfounded yesterday morning, by teatime traffic volumes had picked up and congestion was beginning to take hold.

Drivers at the Dudhope Roundabout by West Marketgait and Lochee Road found themselves in tailbacks due to lane closures caused by Virgin Media duct-laying work, which continues until Friday.

Resurfacing began on the southern section of Glamis Road, which is closed between Blackness Road and Perth Road for a fortnight. Drivers can use the Glamis Road/Blackness Road roundabout to get to the northern part of the street, via temporary traffic lights installed on the roundabout.

Temporary traffic lights are in place for a week on Perth Road, west of Windsor Street, for drainage and surfacing works.

A police spokesman said they were not aware of any more delays than usual at peak time and had received no calls from drivers to complain about congestion.

More delays are expected on Perth Road next week when part of it is closed as part of a £400,000, four-month project to replace almost a mile of gas main.

Dundee West MP Jim McGovern and councillors Richard McCready and Fraser Macpherson have condemned the delays.

There is concern over the impact the Perth Road work will have on local residents and businesses amid suggestions that Scotland Gas Networks (SGN) did not properly inform or consult them about the work.

Meanwhile, traffic on Kingsway faced delays yesterday because of the work to upgrade the Kingsway/ Forfar Road junction.

The work, being paid for by Morrisons, has now closed the outside northbound lane of Forfar Road as workmen excavate and rebuild the carriageway.

Next week, contractors Malcolm Construction Services will close the Kings-way overnight between the Old Glamis Road and Forfar Road junctions, and Forfar Road up to the Claverhouse junction, to raise the height of the carriageway.

The Kingsway will re-open at 6am every day.
