Aviator’s son presents collection

Mr McIntyre (left) and congress president Willie King.

THE SON of the first aviator to fly over Mount Everest was in Perth yesterday to present a collection of philately connected with his father and Ayrshire aviation.

Dougal McIntyre was at the 79th annual congress of the Association of Scottish Philatelic Societies, which is taking place in Dewar’s Centre.

His Glaswegian father David McIntyre completed the first flight over the world’s highest peak in 1933, an event recorded on an Indian Air Mail Society cover (see picture).

One of the Scottish aviation pioneers, his involvement in Prestwick Airport led to it becoming an international hub.

The congress is being hosted this year by Ayrshire Philatelic Society, which was formed five years after McIntyre’s flight. It continues today from 10am to 5pm.
