Activist ready for nuclear protest walk

AN EAST Neuk peace activist is gearing up to take part in a gruelling trek from the United Kingdom to Switzerland in a bid to heighten people’s concerns about nuclear power.

Jill Saunderson, who lives in Anstruther, is one of a group of walkers who intend to journey from London to Geneva.

The initiative, entitled Footprints For Peace, aims to raise awareness of the dangers of nuclear power, and the threat to the planet from nuclear weapons.

Jill said yesterday, “The campaigners are also pointing out the dangers of uranium mining, the questionable legality of weapons that don’t discriminate, the huge costs which take away badly needed resources from communities and the unsolved problem of disposing of highly radioactive waste.”

Last year, Jill was among a group of walkers who travelled from Dublin to London, including on their 18-mile a day itinerary visits to nuclear sites.

In 2006 she also joined the Scotland For Peace Movement on the Long Walk for Peace from the Faslane submarine base to the Scottish Parliament at Holyrood.

The marathon walk will get under way on Saturday, the anniversary of the disaster at Chernobyl.

The walk will set off from Battersea Park Peace Pagoda in London and will raise awareness in France and end on July 18 in Geneva.
