ONE OF the UK’s main cycle routes runs straight through a local playpark—despite a notice at the gate warning that cycling is not allowed.
Now, after concerns have been raised at the potential danger of bikes whizzing through an area frequented by young children, Dundee City Council has announced that it is to put extra safety signs in place at Castle Green in Broughty Ferry.
One local woman said she had been amused when she first noticed the apparently contradictory signs at the park, but then realised that directing cyclists through the area could put children’s safety at risk.
“There is a sign at the gate which clearly states ‘No Cycling’ but when you walk a little further into the park a very impressive display announces that you are on part of the Sustrans national cycle network, on a route that runs all the way from the north of Scotland to the south of England,” she said.
“In the summer the park is heaving with young families. The potential for accidents must be huge.”
Castle Green was treated to a £400,000 redevelopment three years ago.
A Dundee City Council spokesman explained that the green circular route was in fact changed to include the path through the park in 2006.
“However, he continued, “It is only recently that it has been highlighted by the new signage. Unfortunately, at that time the old sign should have been removed and that will be rectified as soon as possible.
“A further reminder to cyclists that they should ride responsibly and be aware of the proximity of children will be put at the site,” he added.* Pictured: the sign at the park entrance.
