Mr Alexander John Harrower

ALEXANDER JOHN Harrower, who had a long and distinguished career with the police in Perth and Kinross, has died aged 90.

Mr Harrower, from Perth, served in the Royal Air Force during the second world war as a navigator (air crew) with the rank of flying officer.

He served 31 years in the police, first in Perth City and then, on amalgamation, in Perth and Kinross Constabulary, retiring from the force in 1970 with the rank of chief superintendent.

During and after police service Mr Harrower was engaged in many voluntary activities for over 38 years.

He served as director of studies at the Scottish Police College from 1962-1964 (senior division) and was responsible for programming the first sergeants’ accelerated promotion course.

A founder member and first president of Darnhall Bowling Club (men’s section) in 1954/55 he was also honorary president.

For approximately 10 years he was chairman of the local centre for St Andrews Ambulance Association.

Mr Harrower served 28 years on the executive of Perth and Kinross Union of Boys’ Clubs and as its chairman.

He was on the housing committee of Dalguise House for Scottish Association of Boys Clubs training centre and served on the executive committee of Perth and Kinross Union of Youth Clubs.

A founder member and first president of Perth Tourist Association he was made honorary president in 1983.

He was a member of the Society of High Constables of the City of Perth for around 28 years.

Mr Harrower was the first chairman of Perth City Crime Prevention Panel and a founder member and first president of Perth (St Leonards) Probus Club.

He was married to Margaret for 65 years. Latterly living in Craigieknowes Nursing Home in Perth, he is survived by two daughters, Pat and Fiona, six grandchildren and one great grandchild.
