Bid to put focus on falcons

Dan Brown and Mr Burton.

A PERTH church is appealing for volunteers for a bird project after “renting out” its premises to peregrine falcons.

St Matthew’s Church in Tay Street has been the home of the birds of prey over the last five years.

The peregrine falcons feed in the church’s 212-ft tower, which is a landmark in Perth.

And now the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds (RSPB) are hoping to encourage people to look out for birds in the area.

Aren’t Birds Brilliant, Perth Peregrines will run from May 30 until August 3, on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays.

With the start not far away, RSPB Scotland and St Matthew’s are looking for volunteers with a keen interest in wildlife to help get visitors enthused about the peregrines and the amazing wildlife on their doorstep.

The Rev Scott Burton, of St Matthew’s, is a fan of the falcons and feels the project will prove beneficial.

“The birds are quite beautiful and amazing to see at close range,” he said yesterday.

“When you look through a telescope or binoculars you can really appreciate what wonderful creatures they are.”

Dan Brown, Aren’t Birds Brilliant, Perth Peregrines assistant with the RSPB, added, “Peregrines are fascinating birds and more and more are becoming urban dwellers.

“Nesting and perching on tall, man-made structures provides the same benefits as their traditional territories on cliffs, being safe, sheltered and an ideal vantage point for spotting prey.

“We are looking for local wildlife enthusiasts to help us bring the story of the Perth peregrines to as many people as possible.”
