Levein: bring on the Old Firm

Craig Levein.

TANNADICE BOSS Craig Levein last night welcomed the prospect of finishing the season against title-chasing Rangers and Celtic, because tackling the Old Firm is right up Dundee United’s street.

Locked in a desperate battle with Motherwell, Hibs and Aberdeen for third place, United at face value could hardly be looking at a tougher last two games as the Glasgow giants slug it out for the league title.

But Levein—who has watched Well, Hibs and his own club struggle for results since the split— reckons the Tangerines may well revel in the nature of the remaining fixtures.

“We’ll be going to Ibrox on Saturday with the intention of winning the game—we’ve got no fear whatsoever,’’ he pledged.

“In some ways I think these matches are a bit better for us than the ones we’ve been playing recently.

“The expectation levels have maybe affected us, particularly in front of goal, and that’s why we’ve not played as we should’ve done.

“Sometimes teams can tighten up a bit, like Rangers did against Motherwell in midweek.

“They were tense and the whole of Ibrox was tense.

“When that happens instead of playing with your usual freedom the players go safe and that has an impact on you attacking-wise.

“What we’re going to do is get back to playing the way we have against the Old Firm and see where that takes us.

“It was a good result for us on Wednesday night (Motherwell losing) and now I suppose we want a draw between Motherwell and Aberdeen and a win at Ibrox for us—it’s not much to ask for, is it?”

United have Danny Swanson nursing a slight thigh strain, but he should be available for the trip to Govan.
