A DUNDEE man is delighted by the public response to a petition he started to get the dangerous Conchie’s Corner on the road from Monifieth to Carnoustie improved by Angus Council.
Barry Young, (36) who has had two near accidents on the much-publicised S-bend of the A930 at Rowanlea Riding School, started an on-line petition this month and already nearly 150 people have signed it.
At recent meetings held by Angus Council, the road was discussed, and although it was agreed that action is required, a council committee voted that nothing should be done on the issue.
Instead they decided to wait for it to be looked at under a wider report on roads deemed dangerous across the county.
Mr Young said, “My reason for the petition is that I just feel something needs to be done to get the issue raised now before there is another fatality.
“I pay my taxes for the maintenance of roads and yet I don’t even use that bit of road after nearly being involved in two accidents on my bike there last year.
“I started the petition at the start of May, and even over this weekend the number of signatures has doubled.
“My perspective on it is that if it’s a B-class road then buses should be able to pass each other at least, and they can’t which makes it unsafe for other road users.
“This stretch of road is also used by pedestrians and a lot of kids go to the horse riding at the stables in the area.”
He referred to an Angus Council infrastructure service committee report, which explains the findings of a site- specific survey of the stretch of road.
“The survey has been carried out and feasibility designs with budget costs have been prepared—this highlights that the roadworks are essential for the safety of all road users.
“The absolute minimum that the council could do is to clear the banks at the side so that there is at least clear visibility at the bends.
“I just think it’s ridiculous that the council could decide to do nothing when they have the knowledge that the section of road is deemed dangerous.”
The petition has also attracted the attention of councillors.
SNP Councillor Rob Murray of the Monifieth and Sidlaw ward, who has signed the online petition, said, “My concern is that there’s been a number of accidents in that area over the years and people believe that the accidents will continue to happen until something is done.
“There were many options discussed before the council meeting about what could be done with the road but when they were disregarded we were left with the option of realignment.
“But it seems the Rainbow Alliance is not prepared to do anything about the corner. I would hope that as people continue to sign the petition, the Rainbow Alliance would then be prepared to review the situation.”
The address for the petition is http://www.PetitionOnline.com/conchies/
The area is often hazardous due to sand being blown across the carriageway from land on both verges.
