‘Stupidity’ of biker caught doing 122mph

A BIKER who was clocked travelling at speeds of up to 122mph on a stretch of motorway in Fife escaped a driving ban when appeared at Dunfermline Sheriff Court yesterday.

Neil Breslin, from Glenrothes, was spotted and tailed before eventually being pulled over by the police as he was heading south along the the M90.

He told the officers, “It was silly.”

Breslin (28), Tantallon Avenue, pleaded guilty to breaking the 70mph speed limit on the M90 on his motorbike on July 25 last year.

Depute fiscal Rebecca Kynaston told temporary Sheriff David Burns QC the incident happened at about 8.15pm.

Traffic on the motorway was light, it was still daylight and the road surface was in good condition.

Breslin was spotted by the police who tailed him and recorded him travelling at speeds of up to 122mph.

The accused was then pulled over.

Miss Kynaston said there were no other vehicles on the road at the time and Breslin did not pass any other hazards while he was speeding.

Solicitor Alisdair Macleod said his client slowed down when he realised there were vehicles up ahead.

He was working as an engineer at the time of the offence, but when he told his employer what had happened he was given a job in the company’s storeroom on a reduced wage.

“He accepted to me it was complete stupidity,” Mr Macleod added.

“It was a clear stretch of road. He can offer no real rational explanation and he accepts it was stupid and dangerous.”

He pointed out Breslin had a clean licence and had been driving for about 10 years.

Sheriff Burns told the accused, “This was an act of crass stupidity. It was potentially highly dangerous driving at 122mph on a motorway.

“You were very lucky not to have caused yourself or other people serious injury.”

He noted Breslin had held a clean driving licence for about 10 years and that he appreciated the folly of his actions.

He said he would not ban him under the circumstances.

Breslin had six penalty points added to his licence and was fined £400.
