THOUSANDS OF armed conflict veterans could be lauded at a celebration day in Perth next month, The Courier has learned.
Veterans’ Day, on June 27, recognises the contribution made by members of the armed forces around the world and highlights issues faced by veterans when they leave service.
Although only in its third year, the event is rapidly expanding—and it seems likely Perth will be involved this time.
Local MP Pete Wishart has been in talks with Perth and Kinross civic leader, Provost John Hulbert, to see what kind of festivities could be laid on for the many veterans settled in the area.
Blackpool is hosting this year’s main event with services, presentations, parades, displays and other activities including a night-time parachute drop and fireworks display.
Mr Wishart said, “Veterans are a very special and diverse group who deserve our respect and appreciation. They have worn the uniform with pride, they have honoured their commitment to defend our interests.
“Many continue to make a major contribution to their communities well after leaving the armed forces. I hope the younger generations will look upon our veteran community and draw inspiration from their many achievements.”
Mr Wishart, the SNP member for Perth and North Perthshire, also urged ex-service personnel to apply for the HM Armed Forces Veterans’ Badge which recognises their contribution to their country.
The badge was launched in 2004 to recognise military service. Rather than recognising a specific conflict or campaign, it is intended to raise public awareness and generate a sense of unity amongst all generations of armed forces’ veterans.
Over 550,000 have been issued so far.
A separate UK Merchant Seafarers Veterans’ Badge also exists.
Mr Wishart said, “The badge represents a token of appreciation, respect and gratitude for the ex-service men and women who have been prepared to lay down their lives to protect this country.
“Perth and north Perthshire has a long, rich and proud military heritage. The many heroic acts and sacrifices of the men and women of Perthshire must never be forgotten.
“Since 1945, our military has been involved in over 70 conflicts. From the jungles of Borneo to Kosovo and now Iraq, our armed forces are constantly on active service somewhere around the globe.
“A number of these servicemen and women come from Perthshire and they deserve to be rewarded with this token of the nation’s appreciation.
“It is important to remember the sacrifices of this generation and share their experiences with the next generation of young people.”
Anyone who thinks they may be eligible for a badge can contact Mr Wishart’s Perth office on 01738 639598 or his Blairgowrie office on 01250 876596 to receive an application form.
